Our ambitions as a company go beyond fairtrade. Our vision for ourselves is to feel proud and grow together personally and professionally. This starts with economic empowerment and a caring work environment. We work to invest in our own futures and that of other women.
All of our working conditions and terms are up for discussion and agreed upon collectively.
Artisans are paid per piece and work from home. The rate is set based on the time it takes to make each style and size variation. The team gets together twice a month to drop off completed styles and pick up materials. These workshops are also used to learn new skills or make quality improvements to our manufacturing. All of the women have family responsibilities and young children so our process is adapted to support the demands of working mothers.
It can be difficult to challenge systems of colonisation, classism, sexism, and work in consumer based capitalism. It's important to be open to adapt and feel that we are constantly learning.
At Tropical Contento, we focus on whatβs in front of us - and thatβs the women in our team. Our work is about much more than a paycheck. Itβs about being acknowledged, respected and treated as an equal human. No one can do everything, but everyone can do something to make the world a more Contento place.
